1898 The Daily News, Batavia, NY, December 30, 1898... "Nellie Evingham of Belmont, 17 years old, took $200 of her father's money yesterday and eloped with William Crocker, aged 18 years."
1899 The Daily News, Batavia, NY, January 5, 1899... "Will Crocker, a Belmont young man of shady reputation, eloped last week with 15 year old Nellie Evingham, also of that village. The girl took $200 in cash belonging to her father and the couple skipped to Shinglehouse, Pa. They were finally located by Sheriff Hodnett at Olean, where they were already to fly to Buffalo to be married, having failed to find a minister that would to the job at the other places they had visited. The girl still had $159.15 of the $200 in her posession, the rest having been spent for a gold watch and clothing for herself and intended. They were brought back to Belmont, and Crocker is now reflecting behind the bars of the county jail."
1900 CENSUS Belmont Village, Allegany, New York ... Cyrus Evingham, b.March 1848 NY, married 23yrs,... Emma M., b.April 1853 NY, married 23yrs, mother of 2, 2 living.... Crocker Evingham, b.Nov 1882 NY, daughter, married 1 year. Nellie is living with her parents and they recorded her name as "Crocker Evingham" instead of Nellie Crocker. One article suggests she got married, and one says she did not. Her parents do list her in the 1900 census as married.
1921 Allegany County NY Marriage Record... Steve Rosmano 37, of Cuba NY, b.Russia, first marriage, s/o Mike and Anna Romana,... married 2 February 1921 at Allegany, NY to.. Nellie Blanch Crocker 36, of Cuba NY, b.Belmont NY, second marriage, widow, d/o Cyrus Evingham & Emma Wildey.
1925 State CENSUS Cuba, Allegany, NY (Page 15)... Steve Romano 47, nationality; Russia, in US for 18 years,... Nellie Romano 43, wife.
1925 The Cuba Patriot and Free Press, Cuba, NY August 7, 1925 ... "TAKE NOTICE, As my wife, Nellie Romano has left my bed and board, I will henceforth pay no debts of her contracting. Steve Romano, Cuba, N.Y. July 31."
1930 CENSUS Cuba, Allegany, NY (household 75, Sheet 5A).. Steve Romano 49, widowed, born in Russia, parents b.Russia, immigration year 1906. Nellie had not died by 1930 they were seperated.
1937 The Cuba Patriot and Free Press, Cuba, NY Aug 26, 1937... Mrs. Stephen Romano.. After a long illness Mrs. Nellie Romano died at her home on West Main street Friday. She was born in Belmont Nov 3, 1883, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. Evingham. On Feb 2, 1920 she married Stephen Romano, and most of her married life was passed in Cuba. Besides her husban, Mrs. Romano leaves her father, a sister and niece, residing in Jamestown.
